UP YR BENCH!

"I suspect that resistance to bodybuilding as art has more to do with bodybuilding's lack of high-cultural aspirations or associations. All of the other fields listed above ("the arts" – fashion, design, architecture, music, literature, theater, dance, crafts) have a history of high/low stratification, no matter how much the designations change or become debate-worthy. No such hierarchy exists in any sport, let alone bodybuilding, which seals its exclusion from high culture further with the high-octane-biker-chick-turbo-fueled-Terminator "look" of its magazines, dietary supplement packaging, fashions, photo-spread iconography, and hairstyles. Layouts with acidic colors on black and photos featuring processed hair, fake tans, chunky butts, massive-mandible grimaces and heaved stacks of iron are the super-hero exaggerations of working class stereotypes. Contemporary art has embraced many aesthetics, but not this."
